The competitors for the tallest building was fiercest between Van Alen and his former business companion, Craig Severance (architect of the Bank of Manhattan Trust Building together with Yasuo Matsui). It was to be 808 ft tall with a crowning glass dome meant to "give the effect of an amazing jeweled sphere." With mounting costs, Reynolds sold the lease in late 1928 to Walter P. Chrysler, who had formed his vehicle manufacturing firm in Detroit three years earlier and wished to make a seen assertion about his newfound prominence in business-he mentioned the building could be "dedicated as a sound contribution to enterprise progress." Chrysler asked Van Alen to make his tower the tallest building on the earth, but this was no singular act of hubris on Chrysler’s part. My late husband first instructed me he was in love with me within the Chrysler Building. I might like to have a copy of these photos.
